From rain to data: A review of the creation of monthly and daily station?based gridded precipitation datasets

Monthly and daily gridded precipitation datasets are one of the most demanded products in climatology hydrology. These describe high spatial temporal variability as a continuous surface for defined periods. However, due to complex characteristics precipitation, it is difficult obtain accurate estimations. Thus, creation dataset from observations requires comprehensive precise application quality control, reconstruction, gridding procedures. Yet, despite multiple advances, created published since mid-1990s present use wide variety techniques, methods, outputs, which can completely change final representativity data. It is, therefore, critical provide general guidelines development future more robust based on data characteristics, geographical factors, advanced statistical techniques. We identified gaps challenges near-future perspectives implementing improved approaches performance 48 products. Finally, we concluded that, better resolutions, access, processing capabilities, observational coverage remains challenge.
